Premio New York di Poesia “Italiani per il Futuro”
Il 5 giugno scorso è avvenuta la cerimonia di consegna dei premi della prima edizione del Premio New York di Poesia “Italiani per il Futuro”, istituito dall’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di New York, con la collaborazione del Consiglio Generale degli Italiani all’Estero e del John D. Calandra American Institute della City University di New York.
L’Ambasciatrice d’Italia, Sua Eccellenza Maria Angela Zappia è apparsa in collegamento televisivo da Washington e si è congratulata con tutti i presenti per aver organizzato e partecipato a questo evento culturale, sottolineando l’importanza di questo Premio.
Il Direttore dell’Istituto, Professor Fabio Finotti, ha presentato il Console Generale d’Italia a New York, Ministro Pleninpotenziario Fabrizio Di Michele, che ha offerto il saluto di apertura, congratulandosi sia con gli organizzatori sia con i partecipanti al concorso.
Dopo il Console, il Prof. Finotti ha presentato la Dottoressa Silvana Mangione, Chair del Comitato organizzatore, il Professor Anthony Tamburri, Dean del John D. Calandra Institute, ed il Signor Damiano Palazzolo, Presidente del Castellamare del Golfo Social Club, spiegando brevemente i loro ruoli. Infine, il Prof. Finotti ha presentato l’Architetto e artista Alessandro Melis, creatore dei magnifici premi. Melis, che è stato il curatore del Padiglione Italiano alla Biennale di Venezia nel 2021, è professore alla School of Architecture and Design del New York Institute of Technology, “Endowed Chair” dell’Inaugural IDC Foundation della stessa università, ed è stato Ambasciatore dell’Italian Design (nominato dal Ministero degli Affari Esteri italiano) a Parigi (2021) e New York/Washington (2022). Melis, nel corso della serata, ha mostrato le fotografie dei premi che saranno inviati ai vincitori.
I vincitori, alcuni presenti fisicamente, altri via collegamento televisivo, hanno avuto l’opportunità di declamare le loro poesie al prescelto pubblico.
Nel gruppo dei poeti fino ai 12 anni, hanno presentato i loro studenti vincitori la Professoressa Barbara Pelanchin Marciandi e il Professor Justin Pizzo per la Thornton-Donovan School di New Rochelle, nel Westchester, e la Professoressa Maria Gloria Borsa per la Bellaire High School di Houston, nel Texas.
Il Maestro Nino Provenzano ha letto un suo sonetto in siciliano scritto per l’occasione, prima di consegnare i premi della sezione Lingue Vernacolari.
A chiusura dell’evento, un piccolo cocktail è stato servito ai presenti. La cerimonia è stata ripresa a cura dell’Calandra Institute per la TV della CUNY.

New York Poetry Prize “Italians for the Future”
On June 5, took place the awards ceremony of the first edition of the New York Poetry Prize “Italians for the Future”, established by the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, with the collaboration of the General Council of Italians Abroad and the John D. Calandra American Institute of the City University of New York.
The Ambassador of Italy, Her Excellency Maria Angela Zappia appeared via a television link from Washington and congratulated all the presents for organizing and participating in this cultural event, emphasizing the relevance of this Award.
The Director of the Institute, Prof. Fabio Finotti, introduced then the Consul General of Italy in New York, Min. Plen. Fabrizio Di Michele, who offered the opening greeting, congratulated both the organizers and the participants in the competition.
After the Consul, Prof. Finotti introduced Dr. Silvana Mangione, Chair of the Organizing Committee, Prof. Anthony Tamburri, Dean of the John D. Calandra Institute, and Mr. Damiano Palazzolo, President of the Castellamare del Golfo Social Club, briefly explaining their roles. Finally, Prof. Finotti introduced the architect and artist Alessandro Melis, creator of the magnificent awards. Melis, who was the curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2021, is a professor at the School of Architecture and Design of the New York Institute of Technology, “Endowed Chair” of the Inaugural IDC Foundation of the same university, and has been Ambassador of Italian Design (appointed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in Paris (2021) and New York/Washington (2022). Melis, during the evening, showed the photographs of the prizes that will be sent to the winners.
The winners, some physically present, others via television link, had the opportunity to recite their poems for the chosen audience.
In group 1 of poets up to 12 years old, their winning students were introduced by Professor Barbara Pelanchin Marciandi and Prof. Justin Pizzo for the Thornton-Donovan School in New Rochelle, Westchester, and Professor Maria Gloria Borsa for the Bellaire High School in Houston, Texas.
Maestro Nino Provenzano read one of his sonnets in Sicilian written for the occasion, before presenting the awards for the Vernacular Languages section.
At the end of the event, a small cocktail was served to those present. The ceremony was filmed by the Calandra Institute for CUNY TV.
