Parmigiano Reggiano in the world: its export climbs 3%/Parmigiano reggiano nel mondo: export sale del 3%

In a year in which Italy’s food consumption fell by -4.2% and those of cheeses by -3% in volume, Parmigiano Reggiano closed 2022 with positive data regarding sales and prices: consumer turnover reaches an all-time high of 2.9 billion euros against 2.7 billion in 2021,  with an increase of +6.9% (156.620 tons vs 152.690 tons in 2021, +2.6%). At the maximum also the volumes in international markets, which grow by +3% (64.202 tons vs 62.351), and the value generated at production with 1.8 billion euros against 1.71 billion in 2021. These are the data released in recent days by the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium, which shows that the companies of the Consortium have reacted well to the pandemic, to the unknowns related to the uncertainties of the geopolitical crisis ignited with the Russian invasion of 24 February 2022, to the expensive energy and to the reduction in the purchasing power of families in some markets. As a distribution of consumption, the Parmigiano Reggiano market is becoming increasingly international: the export share increases by two percentage points, rising to 47%. First in development, Spain (+11.3% with 1,602 tons vs 1,439 in 2021); The United States also performed well, the first foreign market for PDO (+8.7% with 13,981 tons vs 12,867), and France (+7.2% with 12,944 tons vs 12,077 tons). Good results also in Japan, which grew by +38.8% (1,010 tons vs 728), Australia, which recorded a +22.7% (713 tons vs 581), and Canada, with a +6.3% (3,556 tons vs 3,345). Italy’s share stands at 53%. In the markets, the price of Parmigiano Reggiano recorded an annual average of 10.65 euros per kilo in 2022 (Parmigiano Reggiano 12 months as a dairy producer), an increase compared to 2021, when it stood at 10.34 euros per kilo. Production is slightly down compared to 2021, the year in history in which the most forms were produced in absolute: 4.002 million wheels vs 4.091 million (-2.2%). Among the provinces of the area of origin, first for production is Parma (1,357,224 forms vs 1,419,179, -4.37%), followed by Reggio Emilia (1,245,159 forms vs 1,302,555, -4.41%), Modena (849,145 forms vs 824,551, +2.98), Mantua (455,439 forms vs 442,659, +2.89) and Bologna (95,303 forms vs 102,200, -6.75%). (AISE)
