THE MODELS OF THE SIXTIES: THE CAMPUS CUTIES BY LOUIS MARX & COMPANY”
These singular beauties are plastic figurines called Campus Cuties; they were created in 1964 by Louis Marx & Company, the largest toy manufacturer in the world since 1919, for girls and boys alike.
By the end of the Sixties, they were less popular with the arrival of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe & Mattel’s Barbie, who managed more advertising with a higher budget; Louis Marx & Company continued to produce toys until 1980.
The Campus Cuties collection includes two series (eight figures in each) of miniature mannequins of about 6 inches in height, in fashion outfits and poses; these women figures are made of pink or cream colored soft plastic, each “Cutie” has a title according to what they wear and what they do, like shopping, going to the movies or a party or on holiday. These little dolls have various expressions and poses and wear dresses, skirts, blouses, trousers, evening dresses, baby-doll dresses, and swimsuits. They were made in the USA at the time of Women’s Lib and campus demonstrations. The English version is called Teenage Cuties.
The Campus Cuties were displayed at shop windows and sold in many versions: “Belle of the ball,” “Twist party,” “On the town.”
In “On the beach,” the figurine plays cheerful on the beach on a sunny day and the wide ocean around; in “Shopping anyone,” she wears an elegant outfit with her handbag while she goes for shopping; in “Nitey nite,” she’s charming, in her light babydoll; in “Dinner for two”, she is on vacation and is invited to a romantic dinner; in “Saturday afternoon,” she looks very cute in a Sixties style with her tight trousers and blouse; in “Night at the Opera,” she’s so beautiful and sophisticated, ready for an evening at the theater. Store displays also showed Campus Cuties painted with bright colors.
Looking at Campus Cuties, you can imagine the mood or the moment they represent; these nice figures in their vintage fashion style take us back to the optimism and simplicity of the Sixties.

Queste singolari bellezze sono delle figurine in plastica, le Campus Cuties, create nel 1964 da Louis Marx & Company, il più grande produttore di giocattoli nel mondo dal 1919, per bambine e bambini.
Negli anni ’60 sono meno popolari con l’arrivo di Hasbro’s G.I. Joe & Mattel’s Barbie che, con un budget più alto, si fanno più pubblicità; Louis Marx & Company continua a produrre giocattoli fino al 1980.
La collezione di Campus Cuties include due serie (otto figure in ognuna) di piccoli manichini di circa 15 cm, in pose e abiti alla moda, queste figure femminili degli anni sessanta sono di morbida plastica colore rosa o crema, ogni “Cutie” ha un titolo secondo quello che indossano e quello che fanno, andare per shopping, andare al cinema, a un party o in vacanza. Queste bamboline hanno varie espressioni e pose e indossano vestiti, gonne e camicette, pantaloni, abiti da sera, baby doll e costumi da bagno. Queste figurine di plastica sono state realizzate negli USA al tempo dell’emancipazione delle donne e delle dimostrazioni sui campus universitari. La versione inglese è conosciuta come Teenage Cuties.
Le Campus Cuties venivano esposte nelle vetrine dei negozi e vendute in molte versioni: “Belle of the ball”, “Twist party”, “On the town”. In “On the beach”, gioca allegramente sulla spiaggia in una giornata di sole ed intorno l’immenso oceano; in “Shopping anyone”, indossa un vestito elegante e la borsetta mentre va a fare shopping; in “Nitey nite”, è seducente in una leggera baby doll; in “Dinner for two”, è in vacanza ed è invitata ad una cena romantica; in “Saturday afternoon” è molto graziosa in uno stile anni Sessanta, pantaloni stretti e camicetta; in “Night at the Opera”, bella e sofisticata per una serata a teatro. Le vetrine dei negozi mostravano anche le Campus Cuties dipinte in colori brillanti.
Guardare le Campus Cuties, si può immaginare lo stato d’animo o il momento che rappresentano; queste graziose figure nel loro stile di moda vintage ci riportano all’ottimismo e alla semplicità degli anni Sessanta.
