Sandro Lopopolo, the Italian light welterweight boxer who won the silver medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, and fought as a professional from 1961 to 1973, has passed away today in Milan after a long disease. Born in Milan on December 18, 1939, Lopopolo held the Italian, European and World light welterweight titles during his career. Lopopolo won the world light welterweight title when he outpointed Carlos Morocho Hernández on April 29, 1966. He lost the crown the following year to Takeshi Fuji by TKO in 2 rounds.
Lopopolo continued boxing until 1973, obtaining many victories but failing twice to conquer the European light welterweight title, in 1970 and 1972, and the European welterweight welter title, also in 1972. He retired with a record of 58 wins (20 KOs), 10 losses and 7 draws.
