Dr. Mary Rorro is a physician and singer-songwriter who was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame Everyday Heroes permanent exhibit at the American Dream Complex in East Rutherford, N.J. on May 2. 2026. She was inducted alongside her mother, Dr. Gilda Rorro, as a mother-daughter duo, in advance of Mother’s Day.

The Everyday Heroes exhibit honors citizens from New Jersey who make a lasting impact in community and state, and go above and beyond to make a difference in other people’s lives.

Dr. Mary Rorro and the New Jersey Hall of Fame “Everyday Heroes” Recognition
Dr. Mary Rorro is a distinguished New Jerseyan whose career spans medicine, music, and community service. She graduated cum laude with Honors in Music from Bryn Mawr College, served as President and First Violist of the Bryn Mawr-Haverford Symphony, and earned her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-SOM. She completed her psychiatry residency at Harvard Medical School, was designated Chief Resident of the Year, and completed an Addictions Psychiatry Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital American Medical Women’s Association.
As a psychiatrist in the New Jersey Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Rorro developed the therapeutic music program “A Few Good Notes” for Veterans, helping them connect through music. She also co-founded the Guitar Instruction Group for Veterans. She is Chair of the Music and Medicine Committee and Co-Chair of the Humanities Committee of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) American Medical Women’s Association.

Her artistic work is deeply intertwined with her medical mission. She composes original songs for Veterans, healthcare heroes, and cultural events, performing at venues such as Princeton University, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., the 9/11 Memorial, and the New Jersey Governor’s Mansion American Medical Women’s Association+1. She has also collaborated with Maestro Matteo Giammario, who was a 100-year-old World War II veteran, on 16 songs as an intergenerational collaboration on music compositions American Medical Women’s Association.
Dr. Rorro is recognized nationally for her contributions, including being vested as a Dame of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem alongside her mother, Dr. Gilda Rorro, in 2023 L’Idea Magazine. She has received the “Ten for Trenton” Award for her community impact, particularly in Trenton, NJ We The Italians.
Through her work, Dr. Rorro embodies the spirit of the New Jersey Hall of Fame’s “Everyday Heroes” program — a recognition for New Jerseyans who go above and beyond to make a difference. Dr. Gilda Battaglia Rorro Baldassari is a celebrated Italian American educator, civil rights leader, and cultural ambassador whose life’s work has made her a standout candidate for the New Jersey Hall of Fame’s Everyday Heroes program.
Who She Is
Born in Trenton, NJ, Gilda Rorro was knighted by the President of Italy as Cavaliere (Cav.) for her lifetime achievements The Italian Sons & Daughters of America+1. Her career spans multiple fields — she was an actress, model, television teacher, award-winning educator, and a statewide civil rights director for school desegregation, affirmative action, and multicultural education The Italian Sons & Daughters of America+1. She also served as assistant superintendent in an inner-city school district, instituted the first Haitian resource center in NJ’s Department of Education, and drafted legislation ensuring non-discrimination for Haitian students The Italian Sons & Daughters of America.
Her international film career included being named Queen of Photographers and Queen of Radio Announcers at the Acapulco Film Festival, as well as appearances in Egypt and India The Italian Sons & Daughters of America+1.
