Four and a half million euros (about 4.8 million dollars), the largest payment by a private person ever made in favor of a Florentine museum: to benefit are the Uffizi Galleries. This immense act of sponsorship was carried out by the American patron Veronika Atkins. The huge sum will be used to fully restore the Boboli Gardens Amphitheater, as part of the extensive “Boboli 2030” program to relaunch the Medici green. The operations will start in the coming months and will last between two and three years. Double objective, that of protection, or to bring back to the best conditions the many and various architectural, sculptural, and plant components of this suggestive but delicate space; and that of enhancement, or at the same time, to guarantee the recovery of its original vocation to host performances, and in particular opera music. “Thanks to the generosity of Veronica Atkins, one of the key projects of the Boboli 2030 initiative will see the light: the Boboli Amphitheater – said in a note the director of the Galleries Eike Schmidt – which will recover its function as an open-air theater, right in the city where melodrama and opera itself were born. ” The Boboli Amphitheatre project combines my three greatest loves: nature, art, and music – said Atkins – I can’t wait to attend the premiere of the opera that will resound in this magical and unique place in the world at the end of the restoration”. Veronica Atkins is one of the most famous sponsors and patrons in the world in the field of music, but not only, and in recent years her support activity towards the Uffizi Galleries has been growing. Atkins has, in fact, financed the restoration of the Terrace of Maps at the Uffizi, the series of Valois tapestries in the Florentine museum, and the Sala di Bona in Palazzo Pitti. Last October, he gave one of the best pianos in the world for concerts in the Sala Bianca of the former Medici palace.

Questo immenso atto di sponsorizzazione è stato compiuto dalla mecenate statunitense Veronika Atkins. L’ingente somma verrà impiegata per restaurare integralmente l’Anfiteatro del Giardino di Boboli, nell’ambito dell’ampio programma di rilancio del verde mediceo “Boboli 2030”. Le operazioni prenderanno il via nei prossimi mesi, e dureranno tra i due e i tre anni. Doppio obiettivo, quello della tutela, ovvero di riportare alle migliori condizioni le tante e varie componenti architettoniche, scultoree e vegetali di questo suggestivo ma delicatissimo spazio; e quello della valorizzazione, ovvero di garantire allo stesso tempo, il recupero della sua originaria vocazione ad accogliere spettacoli, e in particolare la musica lirica. “Grazie alla generosità di Veronica Atkins vedrà la luce uno dei progetti chiave dell’iniziativa Boboli 2030: l’Anfiteatro di Boboli – ha dichiarato in una nota il direttore delle Gallerie Eike Schmidt – che recupererà la sua funzione di teatro all’aperto, proprio nella città dove nacquero il melodramma e la lirica stessa. “Il progetto dell’Anfiteatro di Boboli unisce i miei tre amori più grandi: la natura, l’arte e la musica – ha dichiarato Atkins – Non vedo l’ora di assistere alla prima dell’opera lirica che in questo luogo magico e unico al mondo risuonerà alla fine dei restauri”. Veronica Atkins è tra i più noti sponsor e mecenati al mondo nel campo della musica, ma non solo, e negli ultimi anni la sua attività di sostegno verso le Gallerie degli Uffizi è andata in crescendo. Atkins ha, infatti, finanziato il restauro del Terrazzo delle carte geografiche agli Uffizi, della serie degli arazzi Valois del museo fiorentino, e della Sala di Bona a Palazzo Pitti. Nell’ottobre scorso, ha regalato uno dei migliori pianoforti al mondo per i concerti nella Sala Bianca dell’ex reggia medicea.
