YOU KEEP THE FLAG: Italian America on Screen, the Outside Italian Gaze, and the Price of Belonging

Version 1.0.0

“YOU KEEP THE FLAG: Italian America on Screen, the Outside Italian Gaze, and the Price of Belonging” is part memoir, part film criticism, part cultural history. It examines how Italian America is portrayed on screen, from Marty and Mean Streets to The Bear, through the work of Scorsese, Leone, Tarantino and Fellini. It also looks at how Italian filmmakers like Muccino and Guadagnino see Italian America from the outside, and what that means for identity and belonging

William Costello Medici is a writer, filmmaker, and media entrepreneur whose career has moved through government service, intelligence, advertising, film, television, and digital media. He founded Dolce, an independent media company that brought Italian film, television, and original programming to American audiences.

Having lived and worked in both America and Italy, Medici writes from inside the cultural exchange between them, where identity is inherited, translated, marketed, and sometimes misunderstood. His work examines who gets to define a culture, which stories survive, and what belonging asks people to surrender.

In YOU KEEP THE FLAG, he follows those questions across Italian American history, cinema, television, entrepreneurship, and his own experience building a media company between cultures.
