WHATSAPP VA IN DOWN TRA IRONIA, IPOTESI STRAMPALATE E RISPOSTE TECH./ WHATSAPP CRASHES AMONG IRONY, WEIRD HYPOTHESIS AND TECH ANSWERS

Last Tuesday, October 25, from the early hours of the morning, sending messages on Whatsapp was practically impossible. An experience certainly not new but it is clear that when one of the most used apps in Italy and around the globe stops working, inconveniences are inevitable. As well as the irony: on social media, there were those who wrote that the headquarters of Telegram (another famous messaging app) was toasting and those who hypothesized the return of fashion of the ring, a practice that, compared to today’s devices, is literally the Paleolithic. Not to mention the memes with the text message icon in the foreground and under the eloquent wording: “Look at who came back crawling”. Of the series, a laugh will bury them. However, trying to shed light on what happened, what exactly happened with the last “Whatsapp down”? From 9 am on October 25, the reports of those who failed to use the messaging app owned by Meta (the company that also owns Instagram and Facebook) multiplied on Downdetector, the platform that collects and communicates problems on various sites and applications, from all over Italy. Among other things, it would seem that problems with Whatsapp have also been found in the rest of the continent. But the difficulties would not have begun in those hours but rather in the evening of Monday 24, according to what was communicated by the company. Initially, the problems seemed solved, but then a relapse led to the aforementioned crash. And while on the web there were those who pointed the finger at the solar eclipse that took place on Tuesday, between the desire to joke and a hair of esoteric conspiracy, there were also those who tried to look for a decidedly more technological answer. According to some, in fact, the malfunction could coincide with the switch-off communicated by Whatsapp for the day of Monday 24 October in which he had officially said goodbye to some old devices that are no longer able to support the application. Specifically, as far as iPhones are concerned, Whatsapp will no longer be usable for phones that have iOS 10 and iOS 11 versions installed (for example iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c models), while for Android, at least version 4.1 is required to continue writing and receiving messages.
