Italian photographer Lella Beretta produces a stunning and heart-wrenching, 500-shots photographic reportage on Covid19 in Italy

Lella Beretta, a famed photographer who I interviewed in the past for our magazine, has just completed a 500-shots photographic reportage on Covid19 in Italy. In and out of the ‘danger zone’, risking by entering the ICUs and infected areas, Lella has sadly witnessed the development and crisis related to the Covid19 in Piedmont, one of the most infected areas of Italy, and thus, thanks to her faithful camera and her immense talent, she created a marvelous, poignant reportage, a document on suffering and healing, despair and hope. We had the opportunity to have the trailer of her reportage, which you can find (and watch) at the end of the article, and Lella was kind to send us also a few of those images for our readers to start viewing them. Here is the comment on the trailer by Lella Beretta.
THE TRAILER… a handful of shots that in 90 seconds summarize my COVID reportage at the ASL of Vercelli…

A TRUE story, narrated with 500 images and three months of “walks” inside our hospital, but also of that of Borgosesia and Gattinara… From the Emergency Department to the Intensive Care, Infectious Diseases, Radiology, Pulmonology and Psychiatry… crossing the Pre-Triage barrier and assisting in continuous protective clothing and undressing necessary to enter and exit the “yellow line” that delimits the risk zone from the clean one…

An army of “astronauts” without identity, whose fogging of the glasses often made them completely unrecognizable, all committed relentlessly to fight the virus and save the sick patients…

Thousands are the things that I could tell about this experience and I will definitely try to do it through my shots, but that strong emotion, imbued with Amuchina, mixed with Fear, with Sadness but even with Hope, will never abandon me, and never as in these months of medical emergency I loved so much my Nikon, thanks to which I proudly managed, despite my little courage in front of a drop of blood, to tell a piece of History of this difficult year 2020…

Lella Beretta
